Written by Lois Duncan. Helen and the gang are in danger one year after their car hits a stranger whose body they dump in the sea. The film had an alternate ending that was used as a teaser trailer for the sequel. It won the Saturn Award for Best Horror Film of 1997. Patti D'Arbanville is Mrs. Shivers (uncredited). D'Arbanville got her start with Andy Warhol's "Flesh" in 1968.

The film played in 2,524 theatres in the US before being released on DVD. It grossed $72,586,134.
Apparently Director Jim Gillespie had never actually been to North Carolina, where the film is supposed to take place. Some of it was filmed in North Carolina, but most of the film was shot in California. In the beginning we see the sun set over the ocean. Later, when the gang runs down their victim, they are driving through mountains. There are no mountains along the coast in North Carolina.
Another thing, the obit for David Egan gives the date of death as Wednesday July 5, 1997. In that year the 5th of July fell on a Saturday.
Helen Shivers mentions Angela Lansbury and Jodie Foster in the film.
